about

Larry O. Dean's solo debut, Cruel & Unusual Punishment, chronologically follows The Fussbudgets' Hog Wash! (1989), but in fact two sequenced solo albums precede it: Lovers Emeritus (ZB030) and Mixed Nuts, or Seven Trips to Oblivion (ZB037). (The latter's mouthful of a title is a surreptitiously overheard quote from one of the many oddball, late-night denizens who frequented a Howard Johnson's restaurant in Dean's hometown of Flint, Michigan, claiming it was “one of the potential titles” for her “autobiography.” Dean, an inveterate list-maker, added it to his notebook as a possible album title.) Neither album was released at the time because of Dean's focus on playing and recording with The Fussbudgets, but with a batch of songs set aside as not “band material” he embarked on taping the ten tracks here in his home studio, mostly by himself but with guest appearances by longtime collaborator, Ned Doherty and cellist/neighbor, Kash Killion.

Originally included as a hidden bonus track is the title song to obscure cult horror-comedy, Rabid Cop, which Dean co-wrote and starred in (as twins!). His interest in composing music for films is further explored in the collections, Bayou Rhythms (ZB032) and America Wags Her Tail (ZB039).
