about

All things considered, Lovers Emeritus would've been Larry O. Dean's solo debut. Originally envisioned as a ten song, two-sided album, it is here appended with bonus tracks from the same time period (1986-1988). Having obtained a Fostex four-track recorder, and inspired by such studio mavericks as Todd Rundgren, Peter Hammill, and Emitt Rhodes, Dean dealt with the unraveling of his relationship with the woman he had moved to San Francisco to live with in these narratives, perhaps most jarringly in “Ridiculous Thoughts,” “First Aid,” and “Other Side of the Bed.” He also references one of his favorite directors, David Cronenberg, in “The Shape of Rage” (the title of a book cited in Cronenberg's The Brood, coincidentally also about the dissolution of a marriage).
