about

America Wags Her Tail is the bookend to Bayou Rhythms (ZB032). For about two years, Dean worked diligently on recording instrumentals in addition to lyric-driven songs, in part to practice his 'chops' on a variety of instruments, but also because of a longstanding interest in composing for films. These (mostly) short, impressionistic pieces could also function as bridges between numbers on an album of more traditional songs, but they were always envisioned as standalone efforts. Both collections are expanded with selections from a shorter third album of instrumentals dubbed Pulling Your Own Cheese (so-called because one of Dean's roommates at the time was criticized for yanking chunks of cheese off the apartment's communal supply from nearby Rainbow Grocery).
